Welcome Message

Hiroki Hori

The congress president,
34th Congress of Japan Association for International Health
Professor, Mie University Graduate School of Medicine
Hiroki Hori, M.D., Ph.D

It's a great honor for Mie University Graduate School of Medicine to host 34th Congress of Japan Association for International Health at our main campus in Tsu-city, Mie prefecture from 7th to 8th of December, 2019. On behalf of the organizing committee, I would like to extend our warm welcome to all the conference attendees.

Mie University Graduate School of Medicine is located in Mie prefecture in the central Japan and is the only medical school in the prefecture. Therefore, the school is expected to contribute to people's health at the local level inside Mie prefecture. The educational activities are rooted in local communities, but always interacts with global health because practice or education of community and global health can be mutually enhancing. Based on this point of view, as the theme of this congress, we decided on “Fostering human resources for global health. From a local community to the world”. Some special sessions and symposiums on this theme are programmed in the congress.

In addition, we focus on subjects like childhood cancer which have not been taken up for discussion at the previous conferences. In September 2018, WHO announced a new effort—the WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer—with the aim of reaching at least a 60% survival rate for children with cancer by 2030, thereby saving an additional one million lives. This new target represents a doubling of the global cure rate for children with cancer. I would be happy if we could share the information and support the new topic of global health.

This congress is the first one of the new era of REIWA. There are some historical sites inside the prefecture in connection with the imperial family. Ise Grand Shrine and Kumano Kodo are world-famous tourist sites. Several attractive cities are also located here in Mie Prefecture. Yokkaichi-city is famous in Japan as an environmentally advanced city which overcame air-pollution from petrochemical industries. And Suzuka city which is known as an international motorsport city, holds the Formula 1 race each autumn. The prefecture is also well known for delicious beef and lobster. I really hope that many people will join the conference and enjoy the foods and sight-seeing of Mie.

We are sincerely looking forward to your participation.
